Histonesarebasicnuclearproteinsthatareresponsibleforthenucleosomestructureofthechromosomalfiberineukaryotes.Twomoleculesofeachofthefourcorehistones(H2A,H2B,H3,andH4)formanoctamer,aroundwhichapproximately146bpofDNAiswrappedinrepeatingunits,callednucleosomes.Thelinkerhistone,H1,interactswithlinkerDNAbetweennucleosomesandfunctionsinthecompactionofchromatinintohigherorderstructures.Thisgeneisintronlessandencodesareplication-dependenthistonethatisamemberofthehistoneH3family.TranscriptsfromthisgenelackpolyAtailsbutinsteadcontainapalindromicterminationelement.Thisgeneisfoundinthesmallhistonegeneclusteronchromosome6p22-p21.3.
