The protein encoded by ACO gene is a nonheme iron enzyme. This enzyme belongs to the family of oxidoreductases, specifically those acting on paired donors, with O2 as oxidant and incorporation or reduction of oxygen. The reaction requires CO2 for activity. In the enzyme from plants, the ethylene has signaling functions such as stimulation of fruit-ripening.
